The concert "Scenes from the Folk Song" is a musical journey that illuminates traditional Greek music through its different polyphonic versions. Under the guidance of Anna Papagiannaki Divani, the Vocal Ensemble The Theatre of Voices presents to the audience 12 selected folk songs from the Greek-language tradition, following the oral tradition of polyphony or interpreting the Greek text through new polyphonic performances. The concert is inspired by the many years of work of the award-winning Pantelis Boukalas, excerpts of which are grafted and coexist with the generative Greek language of folk poetry. The music that will be presented emphasizes the emotional intensity and inner freedom that traditional songs exude, while the polyphonic approach enhances the sense of collectivity and communication that characterizes tradition throughout time and without interruption. In the performance, movement and gesture are inextricably linked to the interpretation and expression of the songs. A polyphony of voices and bodies, therefore, a polyphony of breathing and listening, gives the performance the character of an event, a ritual, rather than a concert. An entire artistic ensemble that combines the sound of voices, the movement of bodies and the image of people who sing together.
