A hands-on programme for children at the Thirathen Museum, 7–22 November 2026
The Thirathen Museum presents "Musical Paths of Intangible Cultural Heritage", a hands-on learning programme from 7 to 22 November 2026 at the museum in the centre of Heraklion.
Five interactive sessions
Children aged 6–12 enter the world of traditional instruments:
- The museum door: getting to know the collection and the sounds of the Mediterranean.
- Rhythms and steps: percussion, rhythm and traditional time signatures through body games.
- The singing air: the wind instruments of the collection, and making a simple reed pipe.
- Strings and wood: lyra, laouto and oud, how sound is born, and building a monochord with the instrument maker.
- Music celebration: the children play together on the instruments they made, in front of parents and the public.
In the instrument-making workshops the children build their own simple instruments and take them home.
The programme is inclusive. A special educator takes part in every session, so that children with disabilities or learning difficulties can participate on equal terms.
